WGA Awards Backstage Report – Modern Family
The team from ‘Modern Family,’ led by Steve Levitan, revealed that his characters are Hawaii-bound for the show’s freshman finale. “It won’t be about Hawaii,” Levitan explained. “It’ll be about a family on vacation.”
Levitan says that ‘Modern Family’ won’t be seeing a lot of celebrity cameos. “We like our cast,” he said. “We get approached more and more every week by people who want to do the show. We’re so flattered, but we want to keep it on check and not do too many guest stars. Our cast can do no wrong in my eyes. Only when it’s exactly right do we want to bring someone in.”
Levitan made two trips to the press room during the evening. His team won for New Series and Levitan picked up a solo statue for Episodic Comedy for writing the show’s pilot. (The latter award tied with an episode ’30 Rock,’ titled ‘Apollo, Apollo.’)

Why Modern Family Is So Great?
Some of the actors of Modern Family tried to answer this question on Fresno Bee:
Sarah Hyland, suggests that the show has attracted such a large following because viewers see similarities between characters on the show with their own relatives. “There’s either that flamboyant uncle or that weird dad or the hot family member who everyone wants to be with but no one can. It’s just a somewhat exaggerated version of everyone’s lives,” Hyland says.
Bowen says it’s less complicated. “We are not curing cancer here,” she says. “We’re just talking about ordinary things in a funny way.”
A lot of the ordinary things in the scripts come directly from the cast. That happened when Bowen talked about how her husband once wired their entire house for cameras and ended up leaving holes in the walls. She got to watch her TV husband make the same mess.
Vergara offers the her explanation for why “Modern Family” has succeeded where so many other new comedies have failed.
“It’s a perfect storm. It’s a combination of things like the writers, the actors and the characters,” she says. “And, we are having so much fun on the set that I think you can see that.”

Young Artist Awards Nominations – Modern Family
The kids of Modern Family, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould and Ariel Winter were nominated for OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERFORMERS IN A TV SERIES in the Young Artist Awards.

Eric Stonestreet – “I’m single and I’m available”
The NY Post has an interview with Eric Stonestreet, Cam from Modern Family. In the interview he talks about the women of NY city, admiring what he calls their “directness” and “honesty.”, and stating:
“I’m single and I’m available,” he announces.
“Maybe The Post could find me the lady of my dreams. I’d be happy to be bicoastal. That’s bi-coastal, not bisexual!”
He also talked about his partner on the show, Ferguson:
“He’s gay and I’m straight and we have fun with that,” Stonestreet says. “After I got the part, we decided to meet for coffee and get to know each other. In the middle of it, we realized it was Valentine’s Day and we were surrounded by lovers! That was a funny way to start off.”

‘Modern Family’ writer on WGA win: TV is ‘so screwed up and mismanaged’

Modern Family took home the trophy for achievements on the small screen at the annual Writers Guild Awards, held yesterday in Los Angeles.
New series: Modern Family.
Episodic comedy: “Apollo, Apollo,” 30 Rock, written by Robert Carlock, and the pilot of Modern Family, written by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd.
While accepting one of two awards for Modern Family, creator/executive producer Steve Levitan told the crowd that because TV was “so screwed up and mismanaged,” many of his writing peers have been rooting for the single-camera comedy’s success on ABC. “Thanks for that, Jeff Zucker,” Levitan said — a reference to the NBC Universal Chairman’s failed attempt to launch Jay Leno’s show in prime time, which put many writers out of work this season.

A new “Modern Family”?
Building on the success of Modern Family and The Middle, ABC continues spending big bucks on more comedies — thus its decision to order 12 half-hour pilots this year. Here is the list of comedy pilots coming from EW:
Awkward Situations for Men (Jeff Filgo & Jackie Filgo). Inspired by the Danny Wallace book of the same name, the series focuses on a British on-air personality who moves to America and clashes with local customs. Cast includes Wallace and Laura Prepon (That ’70s Show).
Freshmen (Greg Malins, Arianna Huffington). A multi-camera sitcom about three first-year members of Congress that stars Sarah Chalke (Scrubs).
Funny in Farsi (Nastaran Dibai, Jeffrey B. Hodes). Based on the novel of the same name by Firoozeh Dumas, which is a memoir of the author’s childhood.
Untitled David Caspe Project. A single-camera comedy about a couple who breaks up at the altar while their friends try to keep things copacetic. Cast includes Damon Wayans, Jr. (My Wife and Kids ).
How to Be A Better American (Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley). A single-camera comedy about a father who attempts to improve his life and the lives of his (not-so-amenable) family.
It Takes a Village (Casey Johnson & David Windsor). A single-camera comedy about two exes and their partners who come together to raise a 15-year-old boy.
Mr. Sunshine (Matthew Perry, Alex Barnow, Mark Firek). Perry (Friends) stars as a self-absorbed manager of a sports arena. Cast also includes Allison Janney (The West Wing) and Andrea Anders (Better Off Ted).
Untitled Couples Project (Shana Goldberg-Meehan). A multi-camera sitcom about two sisters in different stages of their romantic relationships. Cast includes Joanna Garcia (Privileged).
Untitled Dana Gould Project. A multi-camera comedy about a high school guidance counselor. Cast includes Gould and Brian Dennehy (Cocoon).
Who Gets the Parents (Joe Port & Joe Wiseman). A multi-camera comedy about three adult siblings who are grappling with their parents’ late-in-life divorce.
Women Are Crazy, Men Are Stupid (Howard Morris and Jenny Lee). A multi-camera comedy based on the book of the same name.
Wright Vs. Wrong (Stephanie Weir). A single-camera comedy about a conservative pundit who’s very different in private.

‘Modern Family’ Rating
With hard competition from the Olympics and Idol, Modern Family reruns did well:
“Modern Family” at 8 (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) and wrapping with “Cougar Town” at 10:30 p.m. (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall). Outside of the 8 p.m. “Modern” delivery, the best numbers came with the regularly scheduled episodes of “The Middle” at 8:30 p.m. (1.7/5 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) and “Modern Family” at 9 (1.7/4 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall).
The interesting news of that night was of course that after six years, “American Idol’s” amazing winning streak is over – NBC’s Winter Olympics finished ahead of the Fox.

Modern Family Guest Stars – Judy Greer and Justin Kirk
As we know, Judy Greer is going to guest star on Modern Family, but now TV Fanatic brings us a first look of the actress on the scene. She’ll pop up on the funniest show on television next month as an ex-girlfriend of Phil’s. These two reconnect via Facebook and, well, you can imagine how well that goes.
Another guest star that will visit the show is Justin Kirk, who is best known for his hilarious turn on Weeds as Nancy Botwin’s brother-in-law, Andy. Kirk will play the owner of a clothing line on the ABC sitcom. He’ll interact with Mitchell, who quits his law firm and comes aboard Kirk’s company as its legal council.
