“Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet Takes Top Honors as Most Brilliant Modern TV Dad

TiVo Premiere, the world’s first Smart DVR, gives users all the entertainment one could want from TV and the web—and in one place, with one remote and one stunning interface.   This has inspired TiVo to find the smartest TV dads just in time for Father’s Day and according to survey findings announced today, America’s most brilliant TV dads should strive to be as dependable as Cliff Huxtable and loving like Cam Tucker, as “play-it-dumb” dads like Al Bundy appear low on the list of top TV Dads.

“I’m honored to have Cam chosen as most brilliant modern TV Dad,” said Eric Stonestreet, the actor who plays Cameron Tucker on ABC’s “Modern Family.” “But Cam really couldn’t do it without the help of his family, including Mitchell.  This also confirms what I have long believed, TiVo users have great taste. Did I mention that I too love and use TiVo?”

In celebration of Father’s Day, more than one thousand television lovers were polled.  The results found:

The Good

  • Jim Halpert of “The Office” and Cam Tucker of “Modern Family” emerged as the most brilliant Modern-Day Dads, noted for their clever wit and dedication to family

  • The ever-reliable Cliff Huxtable of “The Cosby Show” came out on top not only as the most brilliant Classic TV Dad, but also the all-time viewers’ choice of TV Dad for a day

  • Respondents thought Tim Taylor from “Home Improvement” and Cliff Huxtable from “The Cosby Show” are most like their own real-life dads

The Bad

  • When it comes to Goofiest Dads, Peter Griffin from “Family Guy” and Homer Simpson from “The Simpsons” tied at second behind bumbling Ray Barone from “Everybody Loves Raymond”

The Ugly

  • Jon Gosselin from “Jon & Kate Plus Eight” is the Reality TV Dad voters would most likely change the channel on, followed closely by Scott Disick from “Keeping up with the Kardashians”

“From Jay Pritchett to Al Bundy people love to watch and connect with funny, crazy, and amazing TV dads,” said TiVo Vice President of Marketing Tony Lee. “We’ve found that while many TV dads are entertaining, our TiVo Father’s Day survey showed that brilliant role models, like Dr. Cliff Huxtable and Cam Tucker, resonate most with viewers.”

Whether your Dad is brilliant or goofy, there is no doubt he’ll still want a tricked out man cave.  In conjunction with the TiVo Brilliant TV Dad’s survey, TiVo has launched its Dad’s Tricked-Out Man Cave Sweepstakes to award one lucky father the man cave he has always wanted.  Every dad deserves a place to escape and watch the game in peace, so this Father’s Day, enter Dad for a chance to outfit his pad at http://www.facebook.com/tivo.  The prize includes the world’s first Smart DVR – TiVo Premiere, a TiVo Wireless G Network Adapter, one year of FREE TiVo service, and a brand new 46” Samsung LCD HDTV.

TiVo Premiere is the world’s only Smart DVR and the perfect gift for dads this year.  Not only is it the best at pausing and recording live TV, but what even the smartest dad might not know is that TiVo Premiere provides access to the world’s largest on demand library from services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Pandora and more. Whether he prefers movies, online programming or live TV, Dad can quickly and easily access all of his favorite actors and television characters through TiVo’s gold-standard user interface and universal search feature.  TiVo Premiere also records up to 45 hours of HD programming – much more than any generic DVR – allowing the most Brilliant TV to shine through.

The cast of “Modern Family” recently guested on “Inside the Actors Studio,” telling stories and trading laughs with the venerable James Lipton. One most interesting phrase that came up was “gay for pay,” which is how Jesse Tyler Ferguson describes his Emmy-winning on-screen husband, Eric Stonestreet.

“He’s straight in real life, and they pay him X amount of dollars to be gay! And wouldn’t anybody?”
