Jesse Tyler Ferguson Talks ‘Modern Family’ Gay Kiss, Doing Shakespeare with Pacino

June 26, 2010 by · 2 Comments

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays uptight lawyer Mitchell Pritchett — one half of the show’s gay couple, which has Facebook clamoring for a big kiss — on the ABC hit, is back in New York City to appear on the airy stage of ‘Shakespeare in the Park.’ He is featured in both summer productions — ‘The Winter’s Tale,’ and ‘The Merchant of Venice‘ with the one and only Al Pacino.

PopEater has an interview with Jesse and here are the highlights:

Are you going to offer Pacino a few acting pointers?
Yeah, Al really needed a good long summer with me to learn how to act. This is my third ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ and the first time I was offered it. That’s never happened before; I’ve always had to jump through hoops and audition for these roles, and this was the first summer that they trusted me enough to do it. I guess I’ve paid my dues.

I still don’t get how people memorize Shakespeare.

I’m always so intimidated by it, thinking I’m never going to learn this, and for some reason I end up learning it quicker because it’s like poetry. Once you understand what you’re saying, it’s very easy to memorize. It’s getting over that hurdle. I bought the ‘No Fear Shakespeare’ version of ‘Merchant of Venice.’ Basically, on one side of the page it has Shakespeare’s dialogue, and on the other is plain English. I was ashamed to have it until I saw Al Pacino carrying around the same book on the very first day of rehearsals. I was very comforted.

What do you think of theLet Cam & Mitchell kiss on Modern Family‘ Facebook campaign?
I’m all for progressive movement within the show. I appreciate the passion that some of the fans have. The fact that there is even a campaign on Facebook just shows how many people really love the show and the characters and want to see them happy. I think the writers are proceeding in a very wise way. There’s a great PDA episode they’re writing about Mitchell’s issues with public displays of affection. Viewers shouldn’t be expecting a big, ‘Gone with the Wind’ romantic kiss. It’s very beautiful and poignant. The writers are so good, they’re really taking that criticism and they’re going to run with it and try and create a talking point with it.

On ‘Modern Family,’ the Dunphy grandfather — first shown on Skype talking to his son Phil’s family — is played by Fred Willard, a veteran actor with a career spanning five decades. TV Squad has an interview with Fred, and here are the highlights:

They haven’t shown Phil’s mom yet. Who would you want to play your TV wife?
[laughs] Let me come on down the line. I’m kind of a cynical actor. I had a feeling they just used me, they’ll use Phil’s dad and see if he doesn’t work out, then we’ll bring in Phil’s mom and see if that works. They seem to like my character because they had me in twice and then they asked for a photo they could hang in the hallways so I’d be part of the family. I think if it goes well, maybe they’ll bring me in for a storyline with Phil’s mom. I thought maybe Jennifer Coolidge would be great. Catherine O’Hara. And something I also thought would be a great plot point if I separated from my wife, maybe I’d get together with Shelley Long, who made a great appearance on the show. I know Shelley. We’ve been friends for a long time and I think she’s just great and it’d be great if we met and sparked a little romance. I’d take her away in my camper.

Ed O’Neill Discusses ‘Modern Family’s’ Future

June 11, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Ed O’Neill has a pretty light schedule these days. He has a movie coming out on June 4, the documentary ‘Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean,’ which he narrates. Otherwise, he can relax until July 8, when ‘Modern Family’ will likely receive a slew of Emmy nominations (the Academy has enlisted his TV wife, Sofia Vergara, and ‘Community’s’ Joel McHale to read the nomination announcements), and then, until the end of July, when the cast meets to begin filming the hit ABC comedy’s second season.

TV Squad has an interview with Ed O’Neill and here is the highlight:

What would you say are ‘Modern Family’s’ odds for Emmy success?
Oh, God, I have no idea. I’ve never won one. I’ve never even been nominated for one, so I wouldn’t know. We won a Peabody, and we’ve won a couple of other things. But I don’t follow that sort of thing. I don’t know how it works, if it’s a popularity thing. I think I’d be shocked if we weren’t nominated for Best Comedy. For the individual awards, we’re all in it for Best Supporting. I wouldn’t have any way of knowing how they [Emmy voters] are going to go with that.

Do you know which clip ‘Modern Family’s’ producers submitted on your behalf?
I don’t. I couldn’t care less. They didn’t even ask me. Those are things I try to stay away from as much as possible. You don’t have any control over that. The only thing I concern myself with is the actual making of the show.

Can you tell us what we’ll see in season 2?
Nope. I know we have a couple of new writers, which they’re very excited about. I know they’re hard at work. I know they’ve broken 10 or 11 or 12 stories already. They’re not fully written, but the structure’s there. But I don’t have a clue. I’ll show up and we’ll see what they’ve got. We probably do the first table read around the 30th of July, and we’ll probably start shooting on the first of August.

‘Modern Family’ producer says iPad episode ‘went too far in hindsight’

A producer of ABC’s hit sitcom “Modern Family” said an episode that prominently featured Apple’s iPad went overboard in hyping the product.

“It may have gone a little too far in hindsight,” said Jeff Morton, a “Modern Family” producer who was speaking Saturday at the Producer Guild’s Produced By 2010 industry conference on the Fox lot.

Ed O’Neill Finds ‘Modern Family’ Gay Kiss Controversy ‘Half Amusing, Half Annoying’

June 6, 2010 by · 2 Comments

O’Neill, who plays Mitchell and Claire’s father, Jay, addressed the controversy in an interview with PopEater. Calling from his Los Angeles home, he said he finds the complaint “half amusing, half annoying.” He noted that we haven’t seen Jay and his sexy young wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) kiss either. And, after 20 years of appearances in controversial comedies, O’Neill said that he sees such protests as just another form of show business, not to be taken seriously.

What do you think of the protests over Cameron and Mitchell’s muted displays of affection?
Oh, that’s so stupid. Who cares? When I hear that, it’s half amusing, half annoying. First of all, they’re the most conservative family of the three. Mitchell is a lawyer, and Cameron is a stay-at-home mom with a baby.
