Jesse Tyler Ferguson

Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly reports that the ABC comedy is bringing Jesse Tyler Ferguson back for an episode that marks Betty’s Wednesday move. We last saw the actor back in season 1 as our heroine’s orthodontist. Three seasons later, he’s here again and for good reason. Are Betty’s braces getting ready to come off?

Ugly Betty creator and executive producer Silvio Horta won’t spell out the answer for the audiences. However, he did say that Dr. Farkus and Betty are going to have quite an interesting encounter.

The Modern Family actor was also quite pleased about the news, updating his own Twitter account to announce such an occasion. “In NYC,” Ferguson wrote. “Here to check up on a certain patient I haven’t seen in a few years.”

Positive trend – season’s top comedies

Tim Goodman from the SF Gate choose the best comedies fo the year and #2 is Modern Family:
2. “Modern Family,” ABC. This freshman series had the best comedy pilot since “Arrested Development” and has barely taken a misstep since. Three disparate families – all related – mingle in a minefield of hurt feelings, differing parental philosophies and their own personal quirks. Shot as a mockumentary, “Modern Family” has rocketed toward greatness as quickly as the most revered comedies.

ABC get a B+ from The TV Addict:
The Good: ABC took a fairly substantial leap of faith with their brand-new Wednesday night comedy block, and as luck would have it, the leap paid off. What could have been an epic disaster of HANK-esque proportions single-handedly transformed ABC’s once troubled Wednesday night into a ratings force to be reckoned with thanks to the success of freshman newcomers THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN.

More reviews of “Modern Family” – “Undeck the Halls”

Alan Sepinwall from The Star-Ledger did not really like it:

Not much to say about a pretty lackluster “Modern Family” last night. At this point, it’s pretty clear that the show is at its weakest when the three family units are off in their own separate orbits

And from the LA Times:

As much as I wanted to pretend otherwise, I was severely disappointed in Fred Willard’s guest spot. I was excited when I heard that Willard would be the Dunphy patriarch; it was perfect casting. Phil fans certainly would want to see who created the lovable klutz, and Willard was more than perfect. But was Willard even on screen for more than five minutes? Through a computer worst of all! So much for the physical comedy that was sure to happen between the two. Major disappointment. Here’s hoping the short spot leaves room for more visits from Willard. If not, that would be a wasted guest spot in an overflowing list of guests that is becoming mildly overrated.

Behind the Scenes With ‘Modern Family’

ABC News has an article and a video about their visit to “Modern Family” studio. Here are some highlights from the article:
“We are trying to sort of capture slices of life,” Ferguson says. “The writers really write from their own families, and they are incorporating a lot of our stories as well. And they wanted to feel very real. Not farcical. I think they are doing a pretty good job of balancing that real wackiness with that really subtle sweet humor.”

His partner on television, Eric Stonestreet, agress with the assessment and describes himself in real life as “openly straight.”

“People like to laugh. That resonates first. But I think also we are holding up a little bit of a mirror each week for people to take a look at. Because so oftentimes in life we just breeze past [moments] and don’t acknowledge them, we just sweep them under the rug. … On this set we celebrate them. We celebrate the awkwardness. We celebrate the dysfunction,” Stonestreet says.

“I have been told over and over that no one watches TV anymore, and no one watches comedies. But someone is watching,” Bowen says.

“This show is a lot of fun. And rare,” O’Neill says, knowingly. “They don’t come a long like this often. Now we have to keep this up. That is our job. And [it's] stressful. When you come out of the gate like this you have expectations. Can we keep this up? But it is better to come out like this than to come out limping.”

Modern Family: Is Shakira Getting In On the Act?

Shakira is no actress, but maybe it’s time for her to become one.

She and her hips are wanted over at ABC’s new hit comedy Modern Family.

“I’m trying to convince her to act,” M.F. star and resident MILF Sofia Vergara told me at the American Music Awards. “Hopefully, she’ll say yes.”

Vergara liked our suggestion that…

Maybe Shakira should play Vergara’s sister on the show.

“Why not!” Vergara said. “We’ll write a character especially for her if she wants to do it.”

Meanwhile, Vergara and her costars are the ones wanted by another primetime star…

“I’m obsessed with Modern Family,” V‘s Morena Baccarin said. “It’s my new, latest guilty pleasure. I would love all of those characters and our characters to interchange and do each other’s shows. I don’t know if it would be good, but…”

Aliens dropping in on Modern Family may not be so far-fetched—at least according to Baccarin.

“I do believe there’s something more out there,” she said. “We can’t possibly be the only living people in the universe.”

‘Modern Family’ Star Talks Portraying A Gay Dad On TV

November 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Eric Stonestreet has been busy giving interviews. In the one in Fancast Stonestreet shared how he felt about portraying the very special character, how he’d like to rid the world of reality programming, and what he might say to the more conservative audiences who are concerned about seeing gay fathers on TV.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

Do you feel you’re opening people’s minds about gay parenting?
It’s a really cool thing about doing what we do. By Jesse and I playing gay characters on TV – I’m not really looking to change people’s worlds and belief systems, all we want to do is make a comedy that’s funny and true and honest. But if, while doing that we can open people’s minds to the idea that just because two guys are raising a baby, it’s not the end of the world, that’s an awesome opportunity, to help people change their minds.

What do you say to the conservative folks who may have concerns about seeing this on their TV?
I always say to conservative people who are worried about two gay guys raising a baby on TV is they should continue watching people get raped and murdered on other shows. Like on CSI the other day they had a scene where someone took a person’s eyeballs out. I mean, how many ways can a person get murdered?

You have such amazing guest stars coming up.
This week we have Edward Norton (tonight). We have Minnie Driver. When these people are excited to do the show, that’s really cool. I didn’t work with [Ed]  specifically, my story has to do with Elizabeth Banks.

What was it like working with her?
She’s hilarious. Her energy level is amazing. It’s easy to see why she’s the star she is. I love everything about her. She plays mine and Mitchell’s good friend.

Worth sticking with ‘Modern Family’?

Maureen Ryan has her mid-season review of the TV shows, and this is what she has to say about ‘Modern Family’:

“Modern Family,” 7 p.m. Central Wednesday, ABC: This sterling comedy is still the season’s best new show. Sure, not every episode is as gut-busting and perfectly crafted as “Modern Family’s” best outings, but then, very few comedies on the air now can match “Modern Family” at its best. This show unites sharp-eyed observations about family life with characters who still seem believable (and believably flawed, not sitcom-fake). The best part? I can’t pick my favorite character. Some weeks it’s the dorky Phil (Ty Burrell), other weeks, I’m in stitches thanks to guest stars such as Shelley Long (Edward Norton and Fred Willard are among the upcoming guest stars). But it must be said that the delightful Cameron (Eric Stonestreet, pictured at left) steals every single scene he’s in. (My original review of “Modern Family” is here.)

Will I stick with it? Absolutely
