Top 10 Reasons to Love ‘Modern Family’

July 9, 2010 by · 2 Comments

Emmy voters made their voices heard, rewarding ‘Modern Family’ with 14 nominations, including nods for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and five nominations for its regular cast members. And it’s the cast that really makes the show, so in honor of the show that this writer thinks is the best comedy since Arrested Development, here are Tonic’s 10 reasons to love Modern Family — the characters.

1. Jay Pritchett — Ed O’Neill plays the show’s father figure and is the reason I started watching the show in the first place, because Al Bundy had returned to his glorious comedic roots. How O’Neill managed to be the only regular adult cast member not nominated for an Emmy is beyond me, but there’s always next year.

2. Claire Dunphy — After displaying her comedic chops on Ed, Julie Bowen’s Claire is the very picture of partly managed frustration in having to deal with four children — her three actual children and her husband, Phil.

3. Phil Dunphy — Phil, played masterfully by Ty Burrell, is a lovable goofball who makes you think he has no idea what he’s doing, as a husband or a father. Ninety percent of the time, that’s a safe assumption, and that’s where so much of his humor lies.

Fans of ever-smiling comedy icon Fred Willard will be pleased to learn that Phil Dunphy’s father Frank will be pulling his RV back into Modern Family next season thanks to a casting match made in heaven (with a little help from series star Ty Burrell).

“They said that I should be back, because they asked me for my photo to put in the hallway there on the set — that I’m part of the family now!” Willard tells TV Guide Magazine. The actor, who rose to prominence on the 70s series Fernwood Tonight and director Christopher Guest’s improved film oeuvre, credits Burrell for bringing him into the Dunphy clan.

Modern Family Doing Well In Australia

May 27, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Australia’s Ten’s new comedy Modern Family last night held its ratings share after the airing of its second episode, while Nine narrowly won the night with solid results for Top Gear, its evening news and a repeat of Two and a Half Men.
However, Nine’s double episode of Survivor, which included the finale of the show, failed to make the top ten in overall free-to-air TV viewing.
Modern Family was the third most-watched show for the night with 1.548m tuning in – little change from Tuesday’s ratings.

Tuesday’s most-watched shows:
Masterchef Ten 1.644m
Seven News Seven 1.613m
Modern Family Ten 1.548m

Alohahaha! Modern Family Boss Dishes on Tonight’s Hawaii Episode and Why He’ll Never Do a Spinoff

May 12, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

You’ve been credited in the press with saving the TV comedy genre. Does that bring on a certain amount of pressure?
A little pressure. I did another show with my partner a year or two ago, and they said that one was going to save the sitcom. In full dramatic fashion, we decided to knock the sitcom down a peg first before we saved it. I think we pulled that one off somehow.

Are you planning a Modern Family spinoff, or any other series?
No. I wanna focus on Modern Family right now. I feel so fortunate to be on a show that is somehow working in this day and age that I don’t dare want to jinx it by taking my eye off of it for a minute.

A “Let Cam & Mitchell kiss on Modern Family!” Facebook group was launched over the weekend, created as a response to the fact that the breakout ABC comedy’s gay couple (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonesteet) has never locked lips, while heterosexual couple Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) have done so a number of times.
