Modern Family Season 5 Premiere
ABC’s acclaimed hit comedy, Modern Family, returns for its fifth season with a special one-hour event, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
In the first half of the hour — “Suddenly, Last Summer” — the family is in the throes of summer activities: Phil and Claire are trying to orchestrate a kid-free week by coordinating Luke’s camp with Haley’s beach trip and Alex’s volunteering excursion; Jay and Gloria are getting Manny ready for his first solo trip back to Colombia; and Mitch and Cam make it a summer to remember.
In the second half-hour – “First Days” — Luke and Manny have their first day at high school, which proves to be harder for Phil and Gloria than for the boys. Elsewhere, Claire makes her big return to the workforce at Jay’s closet company and is a little rusty on her first day, and Cam starts a new substituting gig at the high school, leaving Mitch to try to juggle Lily’s first day in 1st grade and a very important meeting at work.

‘Modern Family’ hits season low: Why are ratings slipping?
Earlier this season “Modern Family” was the highest-rated comedy on TV. But CBS’ Thursday king The Big Bang Theory has since climbed to top the weekly chart hitting recent season highs, and Modern Family has slipped to No. 2 and relinquished its crown.
What’s behind the slippage? EW thinks it might be the lead-in show Neighbors , the competition with Fox’s American Idol, and Modern Family’s rather ambitious and creatively complex with a large cast.

Bowen explained to Boston Common that she sought out television roles in recent years in order to spend more time at home with her three young sons.
“The boys are finally at an age where I find them to be so luscious and fantastic that I don’t want to be away if I don’t have to be. We all love each other,” she explained.
“The reality is, Claire is a mom who has older kids… I might grow into a Claire, but I’m definitely not dealing with the issues of sex and boys at school,” she quipped.
