or once, the TV writers were content.

A quartet of showrunners agreed Wednesday during a Hollywood Radio & TV Society panel that the biz is experiencing a renaissance of sorts as such innovative new hits as Fox’s “Glee” and ABC’s “Modern Family” creatively refresh the industry.

“It was over — the sitcoms were disappearing,” “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner said. “Everything was being replaced with news magazines, there was all this terror about the marketplace … and here it is, coming back. It’s a good time to be watching TV.”

Weiner spoke during HRTS’ annual gathering of top writer-producers, joined by Steve Levitan (“Family”), Carter Bays (CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother”) and Ryan Murphy (“Glee”).

“All of us are in a shock that it did work,” Murphy said of “Glee,” which he said tested “in the middle” among Fox’s focus group. “Kevin Reilly and Peter Liguori said, ‘This is a bizarre show, but we really want to keep thinking outside the box because that’s what we think is going to be a big hit on network television now, not just the same old procedurals.’ ”

Should Eric Stonestreet Got A Golden Globes Nomination?

We agree with The Guardian which said:

We were thrilled to see Modern Family get recognized in the Best Comedy category:It’s the funniest new show of the season, but the ABC sitcom didn’t get any love in the acting categories. Ignoring Eric Stonestreet is particularly egregious; he has mastered the delivery of lines such as, “I’ve wanted to be a clown ever since I found out clowns are just people wearing makeup.”

What do you think?

Golden Globes – It’s Glee Vs. Modern Family

December 15, 2009 by · 2 Comments

Historically, the Globes love picking the new kid on the block—America Ferrera, Jon Hamm, Mad Men—but this year that decision will be harder than usual since both new kids are in the same category. Glee and Modern Family have been the two most-revered new series of the fall and both scored nominations for Best Comedy Series. Which will wind up winning?

Writers Guild Sings Praises of Glee, Modern Family and All the Other Usual Suspects

Smack in the middle of the self-congratulatory lovefest that is awards season, Hollywood’s word-processing set has released its own would-be honorees, announcing the TV nominees for the 2010 Writers Guild of America Awards.
While the usual suspect contenders—Lost, House, 30 Rock, Mad Men, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter and The Office—all once again scored nominations, the networks that risked taking their programming in some New Directions (yeah, we said it) did not go unrewarded.
ABC’s Modern Family and Fox’s Glee both scored multiple nods in their freshman year, not only as Best New Series but with a pair of nominations for top Comedy Series—which, lest we forget, is no vanity, thanks-for-playing nod.

The winners will be announced Feb. 20.

Modern Family for Golden Globe (we hope)

golden globe modern family

The 2010 Golden Globe nominees will be announced in less than 24 hours and I’m already starting to get excited — not only is this my favorite out of all the award shows (the stars of TV and film all in one place? Heaven!) but 2009 finally offered up so many small screen contenders, the winners shouldn’t be easily predictable.

And while I will weigh in with my theatrical thoughts after the nominations are announced at 8:30 a.m., I wanted to take this opportunity and speak my mind about the TV categories. There are eight names I desperately hope are not only uttered tomorrow, but also on Jan. 17 — when the winners are crowned!

Best Series, Comedy: “Modern Family”

modern family golden globe

Although “Modern Family” continues to be referred to as “the funniest new show of the year” I think it’s about time we take the word “new” out of that sentence. Not since “Arrested Development” has one series made me laugh out loud with such consistency. And like its dysfunctional family grandfather, I not only laugh at the ridiculous situations this family gets themselves into, but the brilliantly layered writing that requires multiple viewings.

Positive trend – season’s top comedies

Tim Goodman from the SF Gate choose the best comedies fo the year and #2 is Modern Family:
2. “Modern Family,” ABC. This freshman series had the best comedy pilot since “Arrested Development” and has barely taken a misstep since. Three disparate families – all related – mingle in a minefield of hurt feelings, differing parental philosophies and their own personal quirks. Shot as a mockumentary, “Modern Family” has rocketed toward greatness as quickly as the most revered comedies.

ABC get a B+ from The TV Addict:
The Good: ABC took a fairly substantial leap of faith with their brand-new Wednesday night comedy block, and as luck would have it, the leap paid off. What could have been an epic disaster of HANK-esque proportions single-handedly transformed ABC’s once troubled Wednesday night into a ratings force to be reckoned with thanks to the success of freshman newcomers THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN.
