Does Modern Family stereotypes a gay couple?

October 27, 2009 by · 5 Comments

Marconi Calindas from The Examiner asked today whether Modern Family stereotypes a gay couple:

Yet the question is about the inclusion of a gay couple, which one of them is part of the “modern” family, whether the new show is stereotyping gay men in our society. The gay couple played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet actually are not the physically typical gay men portrayed in most TV shows that are drop dead gorgeous, coming out of a perfume or denim jeans print ads. This couple is one of the “common” gay couples in the world: one being overly healthy and one with facial hair. The gay couple adopted an Asian baby and now is struggling to pass parenthood.
One blogger calls the series stereotyping the gay couples with baby adoption, neatness, argyle cashmere shirts, flamboyant dance moves, snootiness, Meryl Streep and Costco virginity among many others. Getback.Com says “Although on the surface Mitchell and Cameron seem like cliches, they also have an understated, genuine quality in their relationship that keeps them from being gay caricatures.”
Is that stereotyping?
Perhaps it’s the creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd’s (“Frasier,” “Just Shoot Me,” and “Back to You”) objective in the first place as they can’t put all the different gay stereotyped characters in the show.
The best thing here is that the show finally has brought back gay characters on mainstream TV after the demise of Will and Grace and Queer As Folk.

What do you think?

DVR Play Ground Emmys

DVR Play Ground gave 3 out of their 5 weekly “Emmy” to Modern Family:

MODERN FAMILY’s Ed O’Neill, for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. Now that William Shatner is no longer eligible for his annual Emmy nod, voters are going to need another rich old white guy they can shower with praise. Enter Ed O’Neill, who in MODERN FAMILY’s fourth outing of the season continued to set the perfect tone for the craziness that goes down in the Dunphey-Pritchett abode. With bonus points for his faux outrage towards son Mitchell upon ‘discovering’ that ex-wife Dede was a surprise Sunday-night dinner guest.

MODERN FAMILY’s Shelley Long, for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. And speaking of ex-wife Dede. Shelley Long’s performance as Jay’s sexually-frustrated uber-critical ex-wife who has yet to move on from the mortifying ‘incident’ that had her creating quite the scene at Jay and Gloria’s wedding not only had us howling with laughter (”I knew they were perfect for each other when I saw his wallet and her boobs!”), but had us checking Amazon for CHEERS DVDs. Seriously, we had no idea Shelley Long was that funny, or that she was capable of such a bang-on Gloria impersonation!

MODERN FAMILY’s “Do Me,” for Outstanding Music and Lyrics. Come’on admit it, you too haven’t stopped singing Dylan’s opus to girlfriend Haley. Find the song here.

Pick up: ‘Modern Family’

Metromix has ranked all the new fall shows and the verdict for Modern Family is “Pick up”. Here is what they have to say about Modern Family:
Premiere ratings: 12.7 million viewers, 8.0/13 overall
Most recent ratings: 9.99 million viewers, 3.8/10 overall
In plain English: “Modern Family” had a surprisingly strong start, and has continued on that track in its following weeks.

None of ABC’s attempts at comedy this fall are going over quite as well as “Modern Family.” The mockumentary-style sitcom about a dysfunctional clan is one Liza Minnelli cameo shy of a well-deserved “Arrested Development” comparison. Cancellation would be a crime.

The Top Five Hits of the Fall TV Season

October 2, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Newsweek calls “Modern Family” : “the funniest new comedy of the season”. Newsweek ranked the top 5 hits of the TV season and here they are:
No. 5: FlashForward (ABC)
No. 4: Modern Family (ABC)
No. 2 (Tie): Cougar Town (ABC) and NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS)
No. 1: The Cleveland Show

Here is their take on “Modern Family”:

Another winner from ABC built on an effective campaign, but this was a much easier sell than FlashForward, simply because it’s the funniest new comedy of the season. The early buzz and reviews for this family mockumentary were almost unanimously enthusiastic. All that was required was to get to viewers to wonder if the show could possibly be as funny as those persnickety critics were saying it was. Fortunately, it is just that funny. And given that the second episode packs more laughs than the pilot (a rarity), Modern Family has room to grow.
