ABC’s comedy line-up returns from the winter hiatus tonight, which means an all new episode of Modern Family!

“Lifetime Supply” – After having a doctor’s visit but then missing the call with the test results, Phil automatically jumps to conclusions and starts saying his goodbyes. Meanwhile Javier pops up unannounced again and takes Manny to the horse races for a belated birthday celebration, and a subtle competition ensues when Mitchell brings home an environmental law award and it becomes a game of who has the bigger trophy, on Modern Family,WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4 (9:00-9:31 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

SAG Awards TV: ‘Modern Family’ Leads Nominations

Emmy darling Modern Family topped the TV nominees for the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which were unveiled Wednesday morning.

The ABC comedy collected five nominations for best comedy ensemble, acting mentions for Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara. The series from Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan had a pair of acting noms in both categories for the second year running, with Burrell subbing for co-star Ed O’Neill and Bowen breaking into the mix this year.

“I’m sure Simon Cowell has a target on my back,” Levitan said. Jokes aside, news of the blow against reality TV came with some satisfaction. Levitan posted on Twitter: “It’s extremely gratifying that a scripted comedy finally beat an overhyped karaoke contest. Thank you, #Modern Family fans!” As if to crystallize “Modern Family’s” pop cultural impact, Apple even featured the series in its iPhone 4S presentation this month.

“That’s what happens in Hollywood,” Levitan said. “It’s just weird when you’ve got the show people want to imitate. How many times did people try to re-create ‘Friends’?” It’s not like we’re the holy grail. Something else will come along eventually. We were just lucky to have created the right show at the right time.”

As family men themselves, Levitan and Lloyd thought creating a show that reflected the lives they were now living might translate to success. “There’s something to be said about writing what you know,” Levitan said. “We were both living this life — raising kids, dealing with very contemporary issues specific to these times.”

For the 3rd straight week of the new season, ABC’s Modern Family registered as the biggest gainer via time-shifted viewing in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, picking up an additional 4.82 million viewers and 2.4 rating points from its originally reported Live + Same Day numbers. With Modern Family and Grey’s Anatomy leading the pack, it was the 3rd week in a row for ABC to claim the Top 2 gainers in Adults 18-49.

Modern Family opened the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards with two big wins in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress for a Comedy categories. Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, who are husband and wife on-screen, were the winners.
