Poor Ed O’Neill has endured a long streak of snubs before journeying to the Emmys, but now it looks like it could pay off Sunday with the ultimate Hollywood happy ending: an Emmy win.

According to predictions at GoldDerby, O’Neill is in second place to take home the award for comedy supporting actor. Experts, editors and users have “Modern Family” costar Ty Burrell out in first place, with Chris Colfer (“Glee”) in third, last year’s winner Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”) in fourth, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”) in fifth and Jon Cryer (“Two and a Half Men”) in last place.

Actor is more than Modern Family role

Eric Stonestreet sighs slightly when asked if some people are disappointed at finding out he’s not gay like the flamboyant character he plays with such zeal on Modern Family.

Some devoted fans of the TV sitcom have criticized him on Twitter for cussing or doing things they believe his character Cameron Tucker wouldn’t.

Others who maintain they can’t see him as anyone but Cam even said they were surprised to see him in this summer’s Bad Teacher, a raunchy comedy about a foul-mouthed, junior high school teacher played by Cameron Diaz.

“That’s the sort of thing I’ve got to stop caring about,” said Stonestreet, 39, who will be hosting a show at Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival next week.

“People are disappointed sometimes but I hope they understand that I’m an actor playing a character. They love the character and they might like me too if they give me a chance.”

“Modern Family,” last year’s top comedy series, was the most-nominated sitcom with 17 bids.

“Modern Family,” which should be favored to repeat as best comedy, once again dominated the supporting acting categories with Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara representing the show on the women’s side and Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell earning nominations for the men. O’Neill’s nomination was particularly satisfying, since he was the only member of the show’s main cast be excluded last year.

The cast of “Modern Family” recently guested on “Inside the Actors Studio,” telling stories and trading laughs with the venerable James Lipton. One most interesting phrase that came up was “gay for pay,” which is how Jesse Tyler Ferguson describes his Emmy-winning on-screen husband, Eric Stonestreet.

“He’s straight in real life, and they pay him X amount of dollars to be gay! And wouldn’t anybody?”

“Modern Family” season 2 will end this week with big surprises. Phil and Claire, for example, are surprised by their kids who show up on their bedroom with a special treat, but it comes in bad timing. Jay wants nothing more than to have a quiet birthday out fishing on the lake, but the family takes that as him wanting a big celebration.

Intriguing news on the indie front: Modern Family Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet — who plays gay clown school alum Cameron on the ABC sitcom — is in final talks to co-star in Loft, a thriller about married friends (including Patrick Wilson, James Marsden, and — also just-cast — Wentworth Miller) who bring their mistresses to the same loft and eventually discover an unknown woman dead in the space. It’s a tale of suspicion and deceit, and the man we know as Fizbo is joining the grisly ranks.
