‘Modern Family’ recap: The time traveler’s wife (and kids)

When last we saw the Dunphy-Pritchett clan, Claire was driving her family to the brink of civil war over a family portrait. Claire’s need for control is often at odds with her mile-wide sentimental streak. This time around, Claire’s contradictory emotions are provoked by the ancient, wood-paneled station wagon that’s been sitting in the garage for decades. At first, she wants it out of the house, pronto, but once they begin excavating it from its resting place, the emotions come rushing back. It’s irrational, but she’s attached to the old beater–if she can keep it around a bit longer, then maybe her kids won’t grow up.

Another thing that’s always funny, if a tad dangerous? Clumsy people wielding power tools. This week, Mitchell and Cameron set out to make a princess castle for Lily. Mitchell’s excited to relive his glory days as a set-maker for his college theater troupe. Cameron, on the other hand, is petrified. And with good reason: With power tools in hand, Mitchell’s like a bearded, friendlier version of Jason Voorhees, decapitating rose bushes like so many camp counselors. Cameron enlists Jay to help construct the castle, hoping the two of them can keep Mitchell busy with other projects, like organizing bolts. (“But there are only six of them,” Mitchell complains). Mitchell sniffs out the conspiracy pretty quickly, and, in an act of protest, finishes the project himself. Too bad he also locks himself into the castle. “There’s a little bit of me in that princess castle,” Mitchell explains at the beginning of the episode.

Modern Family’s Ty Burrell Doesn’t Think He’s a DILF

Vanity Fair has an interview with Ty Burrell from Modern Family, here are the hightlights:

Eric Spitznagel: I never got an advance screener of theModern Family Hawaii shows, so if it’s O.K. with you, I’m just gonna assume it follows the same basic plotline of The Brady Bunch Hawaii episode.

Ty Burrell: (Laughs.) Please do. And you’d be entirely correct. It’s a word-for-word reenactment. We’re dressed in full Brady Bunch costumes, and it’s basically a frame-by-frame remake.

So who finds the Tiki idol that causes a curse? Is that your character?

No, no, it’s Jay (played by Ed O’Neill). I don’t think Phil is smart or cunning enough to find any idols.

Are we finally gonna find out what’s up with the smoke monster?

No. (Long pause.) Was that from the Brady Bunch?

Wait, I’m sorry, I’m thinking of Lost.

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I don’t know anything about what’s happening on Lost. I’m really late to the game.

Mike Brady was the ultimate TV dad. How does Phil Dunphy hold up to his legacy?

Ummm. Gosh, I don’t know if I remember Mike Brady well enough to compare the two.

Come on, it’s gotta be somewhere in your muscle memory. How are Phil and Mike Brady similar, and how are they different?

Well… (long pause.) I think Mike Brady probably had more of his wits about him.

He was definitely the most smugly superior of TV patriarchs.

It seemed like Mike Brady was a really in-control, sensible guy. Phil envisions himself as a hipper version of Mike Brady, but he’s probably not even close. He isn’t that sage voice of wisdom that Mike Brady represented to his family. (Long pause.) Am I remembering Mike Brady accurately?

When Modern Family star Ed O’Neill submits himself this week for Emmy Awards consideration, he will do it in the Supporting Actor category, despite being the biggest name star on the hit ABC sitcom. Insiders said that O’Neill’s move will be emulated by all of the principal cast members. While this might cost the show some trophies, sources said O’Neill is making the surprising move because he felt that nobody is bigger than anybody else in a show that is evolving into a true ensemble hit.

Fred Willard talks upcoming ‘Modern Family’

EW talked to Fred Willard about his upcoming role in Modern Family. Here are some of the highlights:

You’re reprising your role of Phil’s father, Frank, on Modern Family. Frank shows up in an RV with a little four-legged friend?

Yes, yes, it’s his dog that his wife is allergic to, so he’s driven across country to give it to his son. So there’s some touching moments in that as well.

You worked with the creators of Modern Family and Ty Burrell on Fox’s Back to You. That’s what made them think of you? It’s such great casting.

I never think I’m old enough to play someone’s dad, even though I have a daughter of my own and a grandson. But yeah, Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd did Back to You and thought of me. And I guess Ty Burrell kept saying, “Gee, we should get Fred Willard on.”

The first time we saw Frank, it was just on a web camera. What will we learn about him now that’s actually visiting in-person?

He’s just kind of a silly character who loves corny jokes, but also has a serious side, a sentimental side.

Do you have scenes with Ed O’Neill this time?

I do. I did Married… With Children years ago with him, and he’s just the most marvelous guy you’d ever want to be with, just a regular blue-collar guy…. There’s a musical scene that’s done in a real club that’s just really wonderful, where Cam bulls his way into playing the drums [for Dylan's band]. We’re part of the group watching and amazed at the, we’ll call it the drum solo. [Laughs] It’s a hysterical scene.

Any plans to return for future episodes?

The problem is, my character lives in Florida. When I left, I said, “I see the whole family going to Disney World in Florida.” “Hey! That’s a great idea!” As with most great ideas, I haven’t heard much more about that. But they did request a photo of me to put in the hallway [of Phil and Claire's home]. So I haven’t been eliminated from the inner circle. They said, “You’re one of the family now, so we need a photograph.” I don’t know if you get paid for that, but there’s my picture.
