The fact that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney watches “Modern Family” came as a surprise to Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays a gay dad on the ABC sitcom.

“Well I hope Mitt Romney is wondering why he likes the show so much,” the red-haired actor told New York Magazine earlier this week.

Eric Stonestreet of ‘Modern Family’ dishes on his ‘American Horror Story’ guest role

On tonight’s episode of Ryan Murphy’s FX drama American Horror Story, Stonestreet guest-stars as Derek, a tortured patient of Ben (Dylan McDermott) who is deathly afraid of urban legends. (Stonestreet has dabbled in darker characters prior to his Modern gig, appearing as a killer on The Mentalist and Pushing Daisies as well as an accused rapist/murderer on Nip/Tuck, another Murphy show.) The 40-year-old Emmy winner counted the ways that audiences will find Derek wholly different from Cam.

• Appearance. “My hair on Modern Family is a big part of my character. Cam’s hair is a fortress. It’s a 20-minute process every day with lots of hairspray and goo and blowdrying and brushes. And on this show, the character was described as unkempt. Dark circles under his eyes. Part of the story point is that he doesn’t have the confidence and courage to look in mirrors at all, because of a specific ghost story of what happens if you look in a mirror…. Cam most definitely has a tailor and Derek needs a tailor. If Cam finds a great shirt that he likes, he takes it to the tailor and he’ll add the extra colored cuffs. Derek definitely shops at Sears. He’s kind of an everyguy.”

Thank ‘Modern Family’ for the revival of the sitcom

“I’m sure Simon Cowell has a target on my back,” Levitan said. Jokes aside, news of the blow against reality TV came with some satisfaction. Levitan posted on Twitter: “It’s extremely gratifying that a scripted comedy finally beat an overhyped karaoke contest. Thank you, #Modern Family fans!” As if to crystallize “Modern Family’s” pop cultural impact, Apple even featured the series in its iPhone 4S presentation this month.

“That’s what happens in Hollywood,” Levitan said. “It’s just weird when you’ve got the show people want to imitate. How many times did people try to re-create ‘Friends’?” It’s not like we’re the holy grail. Something else will come along eventually. We were just lucky to have created the right show at the right time.”

As family men themselves, Levitan and Lloyd thought creating a show that reflected the lives they were now living might translate to success. “There’s something to be said about writing what you know,” Levitan said. “We were both living this life — raising kids, dealing with very contemporary issues specific to these times.”

Former K-Stater and Modern Family actor  Eric Stonestreet is visiting his old stomping grounds. Stonestreet, who had a week off from filming his Emmy award winning show, spent time talking to K-State students about pursuing their dreams.

He says “I  don’t mean to look all Hollywood, this is as Hollywood as I get.”  Though he is now a big name in Hollywood, he is not letting fame get to his head, and says the “Little Apple” is where it all began for him .

“This is where I figured out what I wanted to do with my life, pursue my dream of acting. I met my best friends here that are still my best friends and people that I talk to all the time and I had a great time here. There is no place I look that  I had awful memories.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, in his Friday appearance on “The Ellen Show,” dished all about Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, his new on-screen daughter, saying that she was a bit existentially overwhelmed on her first day on set — and quite intrigued by one of her co-stars.

“First of all, she’s obsessed with Sofia’s… area,” Ferguson laughed, pointing at his own chest. “And she was basically just manhandling her, just poking. She was just like, poking, prodding… All the stagehands were like, ‘You’re so lucky.’”

‘Modern Family’ star Sofia Vergara launches clothing line

At times, it’s hard to tell the difference between Sofia Vergara and Gloria, the character she plays on ABC’s hit comedy “Modern Family.”

Both have gregarious personalities, an uproarious sense of humor, an enormous shot of sex appeal and daring fashion sense.

Now other women can be more like Vergara — or Gloria — thanks to the Colombian star’s new clothing line at Kmart. The line features the kind of outfits that have made Vergara so popular on the red carpet and beyond — figure-hugging dresses, tight pants, bright colors and short skirts.

“We have a lot of very comfortable and wearable things that can be worn by a woman of every size,” Vergara explained of her Sofia clothing.
