Earlier this season “Modern Family” was the highest-rated comedy on TV. But CBS’ Thursday king The Big Bang Theory has since climbed to top the weekly chart hitting recent season highs, and Modern Family has slipped to No. 2 and relinquished its crown.

What’s behind the slippage? EW thinks it might be the lead-in show Neighbors , the competition with Fox’s American Idol, and Modern Family’s rather ambitious and creatively complex with a large cast.

Modern Family and Cougar Town are time-slot buddies in ABC’s Wednesday-night lineup, so it’s fitting that the former show’s Ed O’Neill snagged a EWwy to serve as a bookend alongside the latter series’ Courteney Cox.

Modern Family’s Reid Ewing, Dylan from “In the Moonlight (Do Me)”, has scored the lead role in MTV’s new project The Truth Below, a telefilm about a group of teens trapped in an avalanche.

The cast are filming the first season’s last episode, which sees the whole clan descend on the Four Seasons Maui Resort.

The plot centres around an intimate birthday vacation in that family patriarch Jay Pritchett, played by Ed O’Neill, plans with his wife, Sofia Vergara’s Gloria.

‘Jay thinks that he and Gloria are going by themselves for this romantic getaway,’ executive producer Steve Levitan told America’s Entertainment Weekly.

‘And she surprises him by inviting the entire family.’

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Clowns: Scary or Misunderstood?
ERIC STONESTREET: Misunderstood. But you’re talking to someone who’s always been fascinated with clowns, so I might be biased. Growing up [in Kansas], I wanted to be a clown and run away with the circus. I created a clown character that I would do for kids’ birthday parties and stuff like that. That’s how the inspiration for “Fizbo” started. Fizbo is my real clown name from when I was kid. I have business cards printed up with it on. [The show's writers] just liked hearing the stories, so they thought it would be funny if Cameron brought back his clown character.

The most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I consider myself the least music snob in the world, and actually, I like to make fun of music snobs. I’m not ashamed to rock out to an ‘N Sync song, Backstreet Boys, Wreckx-N-Effect.
